All sixteen jobs are printed here, fourteen with ranges and two quoted once the doors have been counted on site. What moves a figure inside its range is which door it is and how it opens. One cylinder on a house in the old part of town takes the low end. A door that reads a credential, with a mechanical cylinder under the panel that has not been turned in years, takes the time that cylinder has been owed. Say which door stopped you and the range closes to one figure.
Emergency Locksmith
A lobby panel that went dead before anyone was awake, with half the building standing on the sidewalk. A unit door that swung shut while somebody carried recycling down the hall. An override cylinder that has not been turned since the building opened and now refuses to move. A key snapped off in a fifties knob set near the park. A car locked with the fob on the seat, two levels under a new block. Where the mechanism allows it the door is picked, not drilled, so the lock still works after the van leaves. Two things get said in the first minute rather than in your driveway: garage door springs, cables, panels and opener motors are not work this van does, and the list of which fobs open which door is held by the building, not by a locksmith. If a door has been forced, the jamb, the strike and the cylinder are put back on the same visit, each part on its own line for whoever files the claim.

Residential Locksmith
In the old streets the job is the plain one. A house near the park changes hands, every exterior cylinder takes new pins at $32–$50 per cylinder, front, back, garage service door and gate come onto one key, and a real deadbolt goes where the house has only ever had a knob latch. In the newer blocks the shape is different. The building drops an old fob from its list and that half is not ours. The other half still is: the unit door takes a repin, the mail box and the package room have their own small locks and their own keys, and the override cylinder under the entry panel needs a key that exists somewhere other than in theory. People arrive and leave on work cycles here, so a change of resident is routine rather than an event. Where a cylinder still has life in it, it gets repinned instead of replaced, and anything new is named and priced before it goes on the door.

Commercial Locksmith
The shops and offices along Castro Street, the rooms above them, the strip by the shopping center, and the offices and warehouses out toward the bay. On aluminum glass doors the failures are mechanical and gradual: a hookbolt that no longer reaches its keeper because the frame has shifted, a deadlatch worn shallow enough that the door stops holding itself, a closer slamming hard enough to pull everything out of line. Further out it is exit devices on warehouse and back-of-house doors, master keying for an owner holding a row of units, and electric strikes and readers for a suite where a key has been loose too long. On reader-controlled doors the work stays mechanical and says so plainly: the strike, the cylinder, the closer and the override are ours, the credential list stays with the building. Mention on the call if the car sits behind a credential, because that changes how the visit starts. Identification and the vehicle paperwork are checked against the plate before any blank is cut, and nothing is packed up until the engine has started twice on the new key and both locks answer to it.

Say what the door reads, and the rest of the call is short
