The blocks around the shopping center, where the newest buildings in the city stand: glass lobby doors onto the sidewalk, a ramp dropping to a gated garage under the whole block, a mail lobby and a package room off the ground-floor corridor, and apartments above reached by an elevator. Dense new building filling in what used to be low industrial frontage: four-story blocks around interior courtyards, narrow lanes and paseos between them with a gate at each end, a garage running under the whole footprint, and a delivery room off the ground-floor corridor. Twenty-four minutes.

The flat ground between the freeway and the water: low office buildings and tilt-up warehouses on large parcels, glass entries with a reader beside them at the front, loading docks and roll-up bays at the back, wide parking fields, and a levee path beyond the last fence.
