An exit device has one job that outranks everything else on the door: a room full of people leaning on it in the dark get out, with no key and no thinking. Everything else that door does is secondary to that.
Most of what gets reported as a dead bar is not a dead device. It is a latch that no longer meets its keeper because the frame moved, a device dogged down one morning and forgotten, a rod on a vertical device that has stretched a quarter of an inch so the top and bottom latches no longer release together, or a closer that has stopped bringing the leaf fully home. Each of those is a rebuild kit and an adjustment at a fraction of a new device, and that is the cheaper half of this page.
When a device is genuinely finished it is replaced from four measurements taken at the door: the width of the leaf, its swing, its handing, and the fire label on its edge. That label matters. A fire-rated opening cannot take a device with a dogging feature, and getting that wrong is how a building fails an inspection with brand new hardware on it. Rim devices ride on the van. Fire-rated pairs and vertical-rod sets usually come from the supplier within a few days, and you hear which case yours is on the call rather than with the door open.
