Losing the only key to a motorcycle is worse than losing the key to a car, because a bike cannot be pushed home and a tow means a trailer. It also does not need one. The blade is cut and the chip is written where the machine stands, whether that is a rack in the garage under an apartment building, a carport behind a court, a driveway on the older streets, or a turnout after a Sunday ride up into the hills above Los Altos.
If the bike is parked behind a gate that reads a fob, say so on the call and arrange the way in, because the fob was often on the same ring as the key. That is a two-minute conversation on the phone and a wasted trip otherwise.
Ownership comes before anything, since a bike can be wheeled away by one person: ID against the registration or the title. Then the ignition or the seat lock is read for its code and a blade is cut at the van. Bikes generally leave the factory with one key for every lock, so the new blade is tried in the ignition, the fuel cap, the seat and the helmet lock in turn, and any lock that has been swapped over the years is noted so you know before the road tells you.
